“Comic Books and Hip Hop was My Genesis”

September 11th, 20120 Comments »

That’s a line from indie hip hop group Atmosphere’s front man, Slug.  The song is “Always Coming Back Home to You.”

There’s a book about the life of MF GRIMM who has put out some amazing urban writing the likes this side of Brian Wood and Brian Azzarello.  “Sentences” is an incredible biopic.  A book about philosophy, music, culture and humanity

In New York City, a small housing project on Staten Island sheltered one of the most creative and influential musicians in the world, Robert Diggs, a.k.a The RZA.  RZA (prounounced Rizz-Ah) grew up around crime and poverty but escaped into the realm of art and music through things like block parties and graphitti writing.

Comic books and their influence on hip hop culture is visible in RZA’s screenwriting debut, “The Man with the Iron Fists.”  It’s extremely colorful, action-driven, all pleasing to the senses for a Shaw Brothers’ Films kung-fu fanatic.  Keeping in mind many of us and other children of the incomparable 1990’s didn’t have Reddit. Did not have a smart phone or Xbox Live.  Your choices were: Nintendo or Sega.  The mall arcade or your friend’s living room. DC or Marvel…trading cards.  The holographic ones were so pretty
